Styrofoam™ Recycling at ARL
Howard County’s Department of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services has a new partnership with Dart Container Corporation. The agreement calls for Dart Container to collect Styrofoam™ #6 products from the Landfill’s Convenience Center and transport the materials to its plant in Leola, Pennsylvania, for reprocessing into new products like picture frames and molding, building insulation and other consumer goods.
Styrofoam™ items CANNOT be placed in curbside recycling bins for collection. Styrofoam™ #6 products will ONLY be accepted for recycling at the Landfill’s Convenience Center, open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Items Accepted
White foam packaging, clean cups, trays, food containers and egg cartons (all colors), all marked with the number “6” in the recycling symbol. Foam items that have been in contact with food or drinks should be rinsed.
Items NOT Accepted
Foam packing peanuts (accepted at many retail shipping centers); straws, lids, tape or stickers; foam insulation materials; clamshell or non-foam #6 containers. Check out these unaccepted items (click to zoom):
Helpful Tips:
- foam items must have the marking #6 on them - other foam is NOT accepted;
- foam must be clean;
- foam must be placed in clear or translucent bags (bags will be available at the Landfill);
- large foam items that do not fit the bags can be placed directly in the collection container at the Landfill.
