Howard County Boards and Commissions play an important role in fostering citizen involvement in our government. County Boards or Commissions cover a wide variety of topics ranging from the environment, fire and rescue services and cable, just to name a few.  Board or Commission members advise various County personnel on specific matters for which they are an expert. In some instances, Board or Commission members recommend or comment on legislation, budget items or other important policy changes.

Commission for Women

The Howard County Commission for Women (HCCW) was established by statute in 1980. Its purpose is to promote the economic, social and political equality of women. The Commission is comprised of eleven volunteers who are nominated by the County Executive

Public Transportation Board
Advises the County Executive and County Administration on transportation matters, particularly the County’s local bus system, Howard Transit. Meetings held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the George Howard Building.

Planning Board
The Planning Board is a 5 member Board that hears Zoning and Development cases in Howard County. The Planning Board typically meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month in the Howard Building.
Design Advisory Panel
The Design Advisory Panel (DAP) reviews development, redevelopment and construction projects within the US Route 1 and Route 40 Corridors, New Town Village Centers and age restricted adult housing that requires a conditional use permit.
