BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

Introduction

Howard County Boards and Commissions brings meaning to “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” They provide a vital link between our citizens and the officials who serve them.

Persons interested in applying for a Board or Commission are invited to submit a current resume along with a cover letter highlighting interests or experience which would be beneficial to the Board or Commission to which application is being made. Letters should be addressed:

County Executive
3430 Court House Drive
Ellicott City, MD 21043

As vacancies occur on the various boards or commissions, interviews are scheduled with interested parties. The contact person for the board or commission is usually present to answer specific questions the applicant may have regarding duties and responsibilities. Following the interview, names and “brief” summary statements are submitted to the County Executive for final selection and appointment.

Once the Executive has made his selection, a Resolution is written and forwarded to the County Council for approval. Resolutions are introduced the first Monday of the month and a public hearing follows on the third Monday. Executive appointees are asked to testify before the Council members at the public hearing to share information about their background and why they want to serve on the particular board or commission and to answer questions. The Council then votes on the first Monday of the following month to confirm the appointment.

Note that the nature of some of the Boards and Commissions necessitates annual filing of financial disclosure statements by the members. You will need to contact the individual board or commission for details on their specific requirements.
