Howard County Police Patch

Howard County Police Pace

The annual Howard County Police Pace 5K Race and 1 Mile Walk is sponsored by the Howard County Police Foundation. Founded in 1994 as a business-sponsored, non profit organization, the Foundation helps fund projects not otherwise possible under the county budget.

Proceeds from this event benefit a number of chartable initiatives supported by the Foundation. These initiatives include a college scholarship program to honor officers who give their lives in the line of duty in Howard County. The scholarship program ensures that the children of our fallen guardians can receive a good education. The Foundation also sponsors educational scholarships and awards one to a Howard County high school senior planning a college curriculum in Criminal Justice and one to the child of a Howard County Police Department employee. In addition, the Foundation offers support services to officers and their families whenever tragedy strikes.

Torch Run for Special Olympics

The Torch Run is part of a nationwide series of runs by law enforcement officers to raise money for Special Olympics, the world’s largest sports program for children and adults with mental retardation. More than $930,000 was raised in Maryland last year in a series of Torch Run events around the state. Maryland was the fifth largest contributor to Special Olympics worldwide last year.

In the Howard County Torch Run, members of the law enforcement community carry the Special Olympics Torch on Route 1 from Elkridge to Laurel as it makes its way to the opening ceremonies of the Summer Games in College Park. Each year, the officers are joined in the run by Howard County Special Olympians who have been sworn in as “honorary” officers.

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April

Each year, the police department sponsors a home in need of repair in Howard County. In a partnership with Rebuilding Together, Howard County Police Department volunteers help provide low-income homeowners with warm, dry and safe living conditions.
