TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL PROGRAM

The Howard County Health Department’s TB Control Program addresses three aspects of tuberculosis:

1. Screening

2. Prevention

3. Treatment

The Program provides information about the risks of tuberculosis (TB), screens at risk individuals, and investigates contacts of people with active, contagious disease. The Health Department provides private providers with the current treatment recommendations for people with TB.

When a skin test is positive, indicating exposure to TB, a referral for a free chest x-ray is provided to assure that the disease is not present.

When a skin test is positive and the chest x-ray does not show active disease, prophylaxis (prevention) therapy is recommended. If active disease is detected, the client will be treated in the TB clinic.
