Healthy Recreation

Now available, Healthy Recreation Guidelines and Resources for the Whole Family! Click here to view the pdf file.

Compared to the entire state of Maryland, Howard County residents are more likely to be overweight (39%) and less likely to meet guidelines for moderate physical activity (67%). We at the Howard County Health Department are working to improve those statistics!

Healthy Recreation is to encourage our citizens to become more fit and active. We started with summer safety tips including sun protection, helmets, and hydration. And now we are expanding Healthy Recreation! We are offering more tips, guidelines, and resources for our community members who want to become more active

Featured Healthy Recreation Idea Throughout the year, we will be updating this website with new ideas for Healthy Recreation. If you are just getting started on your exercise regimen or are looking for a new workout, the two-mile loop around Lake Elkhorn would be perfect!

Lake Elkhorn is a 37 acre lake nestled between Broken Land Parkway, Snowden River Parkway, Oakland Mills Road, and Cradlerock Way in Columbia, MD. The path around the lake is 2 miles long. Perfect for a stroll or a jog!

If you know a local park or recreation program that could be a featured Healthy Recreation Idea, please email Sam O’Neil at soneil@howardcountymd.gov
