1. When can I burn leaves and/or brush?
There is NO open burning allowed in Howard County except for recreational fires or bonfires. According to the BOCA National Fire Prevention Code, a bonfire is an outdoor fire used for ceremonial purposes, and a recreational fire is an outdoor fire which is used to cook food for human consumption. Permits for bonfires and recreational fires are available through Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services. Requests for fires other than the above require a burn permit and should be directed to Bert Nixon of the State of Maryland Bureau of Environmental Health, (410) 313-2640.

4. Will I get a bill if I call 911?
No. Emergency services rendered by Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue are provided at no charge to you. These services represent your tax dollars at work.
5. Why did a fire engine arrive when I called for an ambulance?
Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care and customer service. All fire engines in Howard County are staffed with personnel trained to provide basic life support. Some fire engines are staffed with paramedics, which allows them to provide advanced life support. Depending on the severity of the incident, a fire engine may be dispatched in addition to an ambulance to provide additional support. Occassionally, a fire engine may be the closest emergency vehicle and will respond to provide care until the ambulance arrives.

7. How do I obtain fire station and fire hydrant information for my insurance company?
Insurance companies will often ask for the distance to the closest fire hydrant or station from your home. Howard County Geographic Information Systems has a very user-friendly website that allows residents to customize county maps. The following directions will provide you with your closest fire hydrant and station:
1. Click here to go to "My Neighborhood." 2. Type in your street name and number. 3. Click "Go."
A plethora of information about your property will then be displayed. Under the "Nearest" section, the closest fire station will be listed. It will also list the distance from your property to the closest fire hydrant.
