What are the minimum requirements for smoke detectors in my single-family home or townhome which I intend to rent?

The smoke detector requirements are determined by the date the house was originally built.  See this chart  for specifications on the type of smoke detector and location of smoke detector based on the date of construction.  In addition tp the requirements listed in the chart there must also be a smoke detector INSIDE EVERY BEDROOM. Those inside the bedrooms may be  battery operated.

When does the County offer shredding events?

There are two County-sponsored shredding events each year one in the Spring at GreenFest and one in the Fall at the Meadowbrook Park & Ride.

What are the days and times for ''walk-through'' permits?

Walk through is on Wednesday and Thursday from 1 00 to 3 00 PM. There are restrictions on what types of permits can be walked through on those days. Please call the Permits Office at 410 313 2455.

When will my street be plowed?

The Roadway Maintenance division of the Bureau of Highways is responsible for snow removal and operates out of three separate shops Cooksville West Zone, Dayton Central Zone, Mayfield East Zone.

Will I receive notification of when the sweepers are coming to my street?

Howard County is divided into 29 sweeping areas with each area requiring, on average, a day to sweep. Currently, Homeowners Associations on our address list are notified daily, by e mail, of major scheduled work in the County.

Why does the sweeper make multiple passes on my street?

The sweeper operator may be driving around the block to finish cleaning an intersection. Driving around the block to complete a sweep is often times a safer approach than backing up to sweep.

Why does the sweeping schedule sometimes coincide with trash and recycling collection days?

The 29 sweeping areas were developed for the quickest continuous sweeping effort to obtain the best competitive bid. These areas do not align with the current 15 trash and recycling collection routes and 75 sub routes.

Will a sweeper be sweeping my street?

All curbs on the County road network are swept four times each year. Roads without curbs are not usually swept because the sweeper is less effective on roads without curbs.

Does it matter how heavy the recycling carts are?

No. Every recycling truck is equipped with a tipper so that the collection crew does not need to lift the carts. However, it is not mandatory to use the tipper and therefore, the tipper may not be used in order to save time and build muscle.

Help! Something of value ended up in my trash-recycling. How can I get it back?

Unfortunately, once items are in the back of the trash, recycling or yard trim truck, it's very difficult to retrieve them. Please take extra precautions to guarantee that items of value do not accidently get placed with your trash or recycling.
