Our staff also maintains and monitors 8 elevated water tanks and over 40 water and sewer pumping stations. This ensures public water service and fire protection for customers living in the eastern half of the county.

Additional responsibilities of the Maintenance Division include :

      new water/sewer house connections.
  •
  • Locating public water/sewer lines.
  •
  • Several neighborhood shared septic systems.
  •
  • Sewer backup investigation.
  •
  • Sewer right of way maintenance.
  •
  • Water main valve inspection and exercising.
  •
  • Water quality testing.
  •
  • Water related customer service.
  •
  • Water service leak investigation.
In 2008, along with the 137 water main breaks, the Maintenance Division also repaired over 130 water/sewer house services. Howard County is responsible for repairing the public portion of the house service - from the property line out to the water or sewer main.

Our crews also repaired over 50 fire hydrants last year, most of them not as dramatic as the one below.
