Residential Battery Recycling

Have old batteries and don’t know what to do with them? Consider customer take-back programs at retail stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's, My Organic Market and Radio Shack. Visit www.rbrc.org (Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation) for details and additional locations.

Alkaline Batteries (flashlight, toy, radio)

Since 1996, these everyday batteries no longer contain the heavy metals that were considered hazardous to the environment. Therefore, these batteries can be disposed in your household trash.

Rechargeable Batteries (power tool, cell phone, toy vehicle)

There are many different types of rechargeable batteries including Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Small Sealed Lead (Pb). Rechargeable batteries contain heavy metals that should be recycled through a take-back program or at an HHW Collection Day at the Alpha Ridge Landfill.

Button Batteries (hearing aid, watch, greeting card)

These batteries can contain mercury and silver oxide, which are hazardous to the environment and can be recycled. Please recycle these batteries through a take-back program or at an HHW Collection Day at the Alpha Ridge Landfill.

Lead-Acid Batteries (car, motorcycle, boat)

Recycle these batteries at the Alpha Ridge Landfill. Look for the shed at the back of Convenience Center. Acceptable lead-acid batteries also include AGM and Gel Cell, commonly found in ATVs and kid's powered vehicles.

Lithium Batteries (toy, clock, camera, calculator, laptop)

These batteries are similar to alkaline batteries, but contain lithium metal or lithium compounds and should not be disposed in your regular trash. If your battery contains lithium, it should include the word “lithium” somewhere on its body. These batteries should be recycled through a take-back program or at an HHW Collection Day.

Lithium laptop batteries can be recycled through take-back programs at Best Buy, Circuit City and Radio Shack or brought to an HHW Collection Day at the Alpha Ridge Landfill. If you are recycling a laptop, please leave the battery in the laptop and place the laptop in the eCycling dumpster.
